Famous Musicians from Aberdeen

Famous Musicians from Aberdeen

Aberdeen has brought forth some incredibly talented and successful artists - some of whom have performed on international stages. Here at Piano Lessons Aberdeen, we love to encourage and inspire our students by showcasing some of the super stars that have come from the area. Below is a short bio we have drawn together of some of Aberdeen's most successful and famous musicians, to inspire you at a glance!

Emeli Sandé has risen to fame over the last few years, first reaching the public's attention by featuring on the track 'Diamond Rings' by rapper Chipmunk, and more recently for performing at both the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics. After a few years studying Medicine at University, Sandé decided to peruse a music career and began to enter (and win) music competitions, gaining recognition. Her career began to take off with her writing songs for a number of artists including Leona Lewis, Cher Lloyd and Cheryl Cole, occasionally featuring in the tracks herself. Sandé achieved her first number-one hit with 'Read All About It', and proceeded to win the Brit Awards Critics' Choice for 2012. Her first album Our Version of Events reacher number one after being released in February 2012. The future looks bright for Emeli Sandé, and we're looking forward to hearing more in the near future!

Annie Lennox is another Scottish singer to perform at the London Olympic  closing ceremony, and is widely recognised as being one of the most successful (and greatest) female singers off all time. Lennox achieved worldwide success in the 1980's when paired up with fellow musician David A. Stewart as Eurythmics.  Hits such as 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)', 'Who's That Girl?', and 'Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves' were created by the synthpop duo, propelling Lennox into stardom. In the 1990's Lennox pursued a solo career, bringing out Diva in 1992, topping the UK charts and becoming double platinum in the US. Her success continued throughout the rest of the 90's and into the new millennium, whilst more and more awards where collected! Asides from achieving monumental success as a singer, Lennox is also a political and social activist, most recognised for her raising money and awareness for HIV charities in Africa. Truly an inspiring role model!

The Shamen were founded in Aberdeen in 1985 with the original band name Alone Again Or. After quickly deciding to change their name to The Shamen in late 1985, the band began writing mainly psychedelic indie rock music. Band leader Colin Angus was inspired by the sampling technology that was used by new groups such as M/A/R/R/S, and began exploring new dance sounds which would become highly influential and inspire bands such as EMF and Saint Etienne. In 1989 the band moved to London and fell in with Paul Oakenfold, Orbital, and Evil Eddi Richards, who had a dramatic impact on the band's direction. The 1990's saw the release of the extremely successful album En-Tact, which reached charts internationally. The band disbanded in 1998, after releasing final album UV. The Shame ultimately had fifteen hits in the British singles chart, five of which making the top ten, and will always be remembered for shaping the sound of dance music to date.
